Editorial Policy
Bungu Daily is a translation publication. We read Japanese-language sources about stationery — pens, notebooks, ink, and paper goods, the world the Japanese call bungu (文具) — and translate what matters into English. This page explains how we choose sources, how translation works, and how we attribute the original material.
What we translate
Our coverage draws on Japanese-language primary sources that have no English edition:
- Bunbōguyasan Taishō (bungu-yasan.com) — a long-running Japanese stationery retailer and review hub, where staff write up new releases, ink swatches, and pen mechanics in detail. We translate the substance, not the marketing.
- Loft (loft.co.jp) — one of Japan's major lifestyle and stationery chains, used for product listings, pricing, and seasonal release data.
- Tsutaya (tsutaya.tsite.jp) — a books-and-stationery retailer whose editorial picks and in-store features track what's actually selling in Japan.
How sources are selected
- For product specs — nib sizes, ink properties, paper weight, page counts — we prefer the maker's own listing or a detailed retailer page over secondhand summaries.
- For quality and value questions, we look for agreement across many Japanese reviews and shop write-ups rather than a single opinion. Stationery is a market with strong incentives to hype new releases.
- We do not translate sponsored placements or vendor advertorial as if it were editorial. When a Japanese source is clearly promoting its own product, we either skip it or label it.
How translation works
We use AI translation tools (including large language models) to read and draft translations from Japanese, with editorial review before publication. Specifically:
- AI does the heavy lifting: reading Japanese source pages, drafting English translations, and summarizing review consensus across many posts and listings.
- Editorial review covers the claims: product names, specs, prices, and release dates are checked against the original source before publishing.
- Terminology is standardized: Japanese stationery terms are given in romaji with characters and a plain-English explanation on first use (bungu 文具, mannenhitsu 万年筆 for fountain pen), so readers can cross-reference Japanese listings.
- Translation is interpretation. Where a Japanese phrase has no clean English equivalent — the vocabulary for how a nib feels on paper, or how an ink shades, is the classic case — we explain rather than force a one-word translation.
Attribution
Every article that draws on a Japanese source cites that source, with a link to the original Japanese page where one exists. We treat the original retailers and makers as the authority — we are the translation layer, not the origin of the data.

- No vendor pays for coverage, placement, or ratings. Assessments reflect the Japanese source data, not commercial relationships.

Corrections
Japanese stationery pricing, lineups, and availability change — limited editions sell out, specs get revised, prices move. If you find an error — a mistranslation, an outdated price, a misattributed maker — email us and we will verify against the original source and correct the article, noting the update date.
